IP values for lighting and lights
What is the IP rating in lighting?
The IP rating shows how well a light fixture is protected against dust and water. This matters for safety and for the lifespan of the lamp. In humid areas such as bathrooms and for outdoor lighting, choosing the correct IP rating is essential. The wrong choice can lead to faults or even hazardous situations.
IP stands for Ingress Protection and always consists of two digits, for example IP44 or IP65. Each digit has its own meaning. The higher the digits, the better the protection.
First digit: protection against solid objects (dust and contact)
The first digit ranges from 0 to 6 and indicates protection against solid objects such as dust, dirt and (partial) contact. For outdoor fixtures, garages and workshops, a higher dust protection level is recommended.
| First digit | Protection against solids |
|---|---|
| 0 | No protection |
| 1 | Protected against large objects (>50 mm) |
| 2 | Protected against medium objects (>12 mm) |
| 3 | Protected against small objects (>2.5 mm) |
| 4 | Protected against very small objects (>1 mm) |
| 5 | Dust-protected (limited dust ingress possible) |
| 6 | Dust-tight |
Second digit: protection against water and moisture
The second digit ranges from 0 to 8 and indicates how well the fixture withstands moisture and water. This is especially important in bathrooms, gardens, under canopies and on façades. The higher the number, the better the protection against splashes, jets or even immersion.
| Second digit | Protection against water |
|---|---|
| 0 | No protection against water |
| 1 | Protected against dripping water |
| 2 | Protected against dripping water up to 15° tilt |
| 3 | Protected against spraying water |
| 4 | Protected against splashing water from all directions |
| 5 | Protected against water jets |
| 6 | Protected against powerful water jets |
| 7 | Protected against temporary immersion |
| 8 | Suitable for continuous immersion |
Common IP ratings in practice
IP20 is suitable for dry indoor areas such as living rooms and bedrooms. IP44 is often chosen for bathrooms and covered outdoor areas thanks to splash protection. IP65 is ideal for outdoor lighting exposed to rain and dirt. For ground lights, pond lighting or other extreme conditions, IP67 or IP68 is often the best choice.
By considering where the lamp will be installed and what conditions it will face, you can easily select the right IP rating for safe, durable lighting.
