Explanation of the Garden Lights 12 Volt System
Explanation of the Garden Lights 12 Volt System
The Garden Lights system is a safe and easy way to illuminate your garden. The Garden Lights system runs on 12 volts (low voltage), making it safe to use and easy to install yourself. When purchasing Garden Lights 12 volt, there are a few key things to keep in mind. We are happy to help and advise you in selecting the right components to complete your system. In general, there are three steps to choosing the right products for your Garden Lights system. There are also various accessories to complete your 12 volt setup. Below, you'll find an explanation of these steps and accessories. At the bottom, watch the video in which we explain the system with a few examples.
Install garden lighting yourself
You can install the Garden Lights 12 volt system yourself in your own garden. Because the system operates on 12 volts, the voltage on the cables is very low, which also makes them more resistant to short circuits. Additionally, the cables only need to be buried 5 cm below the surface. We do recommend placing the cables in areas where you don’t frequently dig with a shovel or rake. One of the benefits of a 12 volt cable is that if it's accidentally damaged, it’s easy to reconnect.
You can get started right away with your Garden Lights 12 volt system by visiting one of our subcategories:
Step 1: Which fixtures?
The Garden Lights range offers a wide selection of fixtures that can be connected to the 12 volt system. Think of spotlights to highlight trees or garden features, wall lights to create ambiance, or wall spots for illuminating walls. For pathways or garden borders, Garden Lights offers a variety of standing fixtures.
Step 2: Which transformer?
When choosing a transformer, add up the wattages of all the fixtures you plan to use. This total wattage determines the transformer you need. We recommend leaving some extra capacity in wattage, so you can later add accessories or more fixtures. Garden Lights offers a 24W, 60W, and 150W transformer.
Step 3: Which cables?
Fixed cable system
The fixed cable system includes cables with pre-installed connection points spaced two meters apart. The advantage is you don't need to buy extra connectors. These cables are available in 10 meters (4 connectors) and 15 meters (6 connectors).
Flexible cable system
This system allows more freedom in placing fixtures. It has no pre-installed connectors; you’ll need to order separate female connectors for each fixture. Available in 10, 25, and 50 meter rolls. Cables can be combined using connectors.
If you cut a 50m cable roll to go in two directions, you'll need a male connector to reconnect the cut-off section to the system.
Cable thickness
Garden Lights uses 3 cable types: SPT-1, SPT-2, and SPT-3 (thickest). SPT-2 is an upgrade, achieving the same distance as SPT-3 with a thinner cable. SPT-1 supports up to 30 meters, and SPT-2 and SPT-3 support up to 50 meters. Longer distances may work depending on total wattage, but lights at the end might be dimmer. Fixed cable systems come in SPT-1 and SPT-3; flexible systems use SPT-2 only.
Garden Lights Accessories
Timer Sensor
The Timer Sensor automatically switches your lights on at dusk. You can set how long the lights stay on, so they don’t run all night.
Cable Splitter
Use a cable splitter to branch your main cable in two directions (e.g., left and right of the transformer). For mid-cable splits, use a female connector.
Extension Cables
If your fixture cable is too short to reach the main cable, use 2-meter, 6-meter, or 10-meter extension cables instead of repositioning the main cable.
Switch Plus
The Switch Plus lets you control your lights via a smartphone app. You can connect multiple Switch Plus units in different zones of your garden and control each zone individually.
Motion Sensor
Connect a motion sensor to Garden Lights for enhanced security. You can attach it to a specific fixture (e.g., gate light) so it only turns on when motion is detected.
Remote Control
Use the Remote + Receiver to control your lights from inside. The set includes a remote and one receiver. Fixtures connected after the receiver respond to the remote. Multiple zones can be set up with additional receivers.
