The 'E' is short for Edison (the screw thread applied in, for example, regular light bulbs and light fittings). The number '27' refers to the diameter of the fitting, in millimetres. Just like the E14 fitting, the E27 fitting is the most popular fitting in most lights that make use of 230-240-volt lights. In some countries, such as the Netherlands and Belgium, this is the 'standard' fitting for regular light bulbs. This E27 fitting is used both at home and in industrial settings.
Because the development on the E27 light has been a consistent research, we notice a lot of energy-friendly lights have flooded the market throughout the years. First of all, in the early '80s (20th century), the saving light bulb was one of the inventions. This caused a substantial saving on energy everywhere!
The last couple of years, we notice a peak in LED technology. There used to be nothing but bright white-coloured LEDs, but fortunately technology and research has provided innovation - nowadays, you can also buy 'warm white' coloured E27 fitting LED light bulbs. LED lights with a E27 fitting have become increasingly popular because of this.
On top of the many technical developments in order to make lights more energy-friendly, there has also been a substantial effort in creating all types and sizes of E27 light bulbs.
You can choose from regular light bulbs, saving light bulbs, LED lights or even eco-halogen lights. The wattages of these lights vary a lot! E27 fitting lights can also vary in shape. Think of, for example, cone-shaped lights and candle-shaped lights. In conclusion, the E27 fitting is a very broad concept.
