Concrete product

Concrete is an artificial rock-like material that is often used in construction as construction material. Modern-day concrete in the United Kingdom consists out of cement and one or more additional materials such as sand, gravel or mortar. Cement has as main characteristic that it hardens when water is added to the cement itself.

Concrete lights and concrete as construction material

Decent concrete is a mixture in which the grains of the different types of sand and gravel, in the right amounts, compliment each other so well, that you end up with a mixture that hardens into a rock-like, sustainable material. In contrast with, for example, plaster, hardened concrete no longer dissolves in water. Thanks to the relatively inexpensive price of the material, the simplicity of its use and the countless possibilities, concrete has become a popular construction material.

There are plenty of different kinds of concrete, such as:

·         Reinforced concrete: reinforced concrete is a combination of concrete and steel bars (reinforced steel). The bars are applied on the locations where tension will occur. Reinforcing concrete is quite possible because the thermic expansion coefficient of steel is equal to the concrete one. Decay of concrete is something that happens a lot when you use reinforced concrete of an inferior quality. Often it happens when the reinforced parts are not covered well enough in the concrete, causing the concrete to rust. It shows in the rust-coloured stains on the concrete's surface. This layer of rust will become thicker and thicker, and eventually it will push the concrete away, causing it to crumble. Concrete decay is most frequently caused by the carbonation and dripping of moisture and chlorine ions, which can be found in salt.

·         Pre-stressed concrete: looks like reinforced concrete, but in addition to the steel bars, pre-stressed concrete will also make use of pre-stressed (or post-stressed) steel cables and wiring in the concrete. By the tension applied to these cables, a certain pressure will be applied onto the concrete, causing a compensation of the pressure power. This allows a pre-stressed concrete element to withstand more pressure than a reinforced concrete element of the same measurements. Prefabricated pre-stressed concrete is often used in the construction of viaducts and floors.
